South Park 2020-2021 Learning Plan

Overview

This document, aligned to the RCAS Together Again plan, provides the context for how that plan will be applied at South Park. This overview of the various instructional models our learners may experience is intended to help our families in selecting between the two options provided by RCAS: On Campus/Off Campus hybrid, and Distance Learning. We have provided descriptions of each option below to help you make an informed decision for your family.

At the end of this document, you can find a “Quick Reference” to each of our instructional models: On Campus/Off Campus hybrid, and Distance Learning.

Please keep in mind this is a working document, and we may need to make adjustments based on enrollment, availability of staff, and new guidelines or directions from RCAS leadership, the South Dakota Department of Education, or the South Dakota Department of Health.

More information on health and safety measures and levels of community spread can be found in the RCAS Together Again plan.

Option 1: On Campus/Off Campus Hybrid

Levels of Community Spread

Level 1 – Learners will attend school on campus Monday-Thursday. Friday is considered an off-campus learning day for all students.

Level 2 – Learners will be split into Team A (last names A-K) and Team B (last names L-Z), we will keep siblings together regardless of last names, and attend on-campus two days of the week, and 3 days a week will be off-campus. Team A will be on campus Monday and Tuesday, and Team B will be on campus Wednesday and Thursday.

Level 3 – Learners will be off-campus Monday-Friday.

On Campus Learning

Families that select the On Campus/Off Campus Hybrid Learning model can expect instruction to closely resemble regular instructional programming while learners are physically at school, with additional health and safety precautions. Learners will have whole group instruction, small group learning opportunities, and independent practice. South Park will implement a blended learning model using a balanced approach to integrating technology; allowing our learners to move at their optimal pace through core content.

Learners will have core instruction, including reading, writing, and math, along with physical education, music, and Media Center/Library/STEAM class.

Academic interventions and extensions will also be part of our learners’ on-campus day. Fourth- and fifth-grade students will also be able to participate in band and orchestra one day per week.

Recorded versions of lessons, as well as digital assignments and assessments, will be available using Google Classroom for learners to review as needed.

Off Campus Learning (including off-campus Fridays and the Level 2 split attendance model)

Off-Campus Learning and On-Campus Learning will have several important similarities, including direct instruction, small group learning opportunities, and independent practice. All learners will continue to have reading, writing, math, and Specials. While the access for some of these will look a little differently, our goal is to provide continuity of learning regardless of where it takes place.

During the off-campus days, learners and families can expect new content each day in the form of recorded lessons, including directions and worked examples whenever they are appropriate; these resources will be accessible through Google Classroom.

In Level 1, off-campus learning will take place on Fridays for all learners, with the other four days on-campus. If the district is in Level II, learners will be split into Team A (last names A-K) and Team B (last names L-Z) and attend on-campus two days of the week, and 3 days a week will be off-campus. Off-campus learners in Level 2 can expect at least one additional “live” small group or individual instructional meeting each week using Zoom, in addition to their small group meetings during on-campus days. Specials classes will be available online through Google Classroom.

In the event the district moves to Level 3, all learners will be off-campus 100% of the time. Core content (reading, writing, and math) and Specials will be available every day; new material will be delivered through recorded lessons on Google Classroom, with learners touching base with teachers “live” via Zoom two to three days a week for small group or individual instruction. In all levels, families can reach out to teachers for additional support.

All learners will be provided with a laptop for at home use.

On off-campus Fridays, our teachers will be developing and posting their lessons for the following week, attending team or school meetings, and touching base with small groups and individual learners.

Option 2: Distance Learning

Levels of Community Spread

Level 1 – Learners will be off-campus Monday-Friday.

Level 2 – Learners will be off-campus Monday-Friday.

Level 3 – Learners will be off-campus Monday-Friday.

Families that choose the Distance Learning option will receive instruction in Reading, Writing, and Math from RCAS teachers. Families and learners can expect instruction in the Distance Learning option to closely resemble regular instructional programming, with some notable exceptions. Learners will have recorded direct instruction, “live” small group learning opportunities via Zoom, and independent practice. Our PE, music, and STEAM teachers will also be uploading optional content for our distance learners. All content will be available through Google Classroom, with direct links to other resources, as necessary.

Small group instruction using Zoom for reading, writing, and math will most likely take place after 3:45 pm, but all other content can be accessed throughout the day to better fit your family’s schedule.

Learners will be expected to “attend” their small group meetings and to complete tasks. Access to the internet is required for this option, and a laptop will be provided by RCAS. Families who select the Distance Learning option will be enrolled for a minimum of one trimester. Your family will be able to decide at the end of each trimester to remain in Distance Learning, or to move to the On Campus/Off Campus hybrid option.

IEP, 504, and LAP

Learners on IEP, 504, or LAP plans will be contacted by their case managers to determine how goals and services will be met within each learning plan. RCAS and South Park are committed to providing free and appropriate educational opportunities for students with disabilities to the greatest extent possible in alignment with the South Dakota Department of Health and CDC guidelines, along with guidance from the South Dakota Department of Education.
